Radium Girls: A One Act Play
Date: Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 7:30pm
Tickets: 5.00
A one act version of the play by D. W. Gregory, Radium Girls is set in 1920s New Jersey. The recently discovered glowing element has been harnessed for the war effort, with radium-based paint being applied to watches to make them visible in the dark (and in the trenches). The radium is put on by hand, often with a brush that is first moistened by mouth. When the girls working in the plant begin dying of cancer, the girls fight to bring the company to justice. Radium Girls is Grand Rapids Christian High School’s entry into the 2010 Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association (MIFA) Theatre Festival. The festival is a highly competitive event that allows students the opportunity to compete with high schools from all over the state. The presentations are traveling shows that begin and end with an empty stage and cannot be longer than forty-five minutes.
