The Michigan Art Education Association Presents the Governor's Traveling Exhibit
On Exhibit March 31 - April 16, 2010
The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is unique in that the state of Michigan is the only state to hold such a celebration of the arts. On October 28, 1993 the Michigan Youth Arts Festival was the recipient of the Governor’s Arts Award awarded by the Concerned Citizens for the Arts in Michigan and Governor & Mrs. John Engler. The award was presented at the Detroit Institute of the Arts. For forty-seven years, select honor arts students from high schools throughout Michigan have been invited to participate in workshops and / or perform at Western Michigan University in May. The art work of about one hundred students has been honored at the Festival held in May of 2009. Thirty of the works from high schools all over the state have been selected to travel with the Governor’s Traveling Show this year. Originally called the Michigan Art Education Association Traveling Show, the name was changed to the Governor’s Traveling Show when Governor Blanchard gave the exhibit his endorsement. Sixteen of the MAEA regions exhibit juried artwork in their regions in January or February. These works were brought to Lansing last March for final adjudication for the Festival in May. These thirty pieces that make up the Governor’s Traveling Show were chosen from the finest art works created by students throughout Michigan last year.
